The term comes from the Mandarin phrase Shā Zhū Pán, which means 'killing the pig.' In the context of financial fraud, it describes a sophisticated multi-stage confidence scheme in which criminals spend weeks or months cultivating a relationship with the victim, often romantic or professional, before directing them toward fraudulent cryptocurrency investment platforms.
These are not impulsive crimes. They are industrial-scale fraud operations run by transnational criminal networks, many operating out of forced-labor compounds in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos.
The Three Stages of Pig Butchering Scams: Hunting, Fattening, Slaughter
Hunting: The scammer approaches via a dating app, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, or a wrong-number text. They pose as a successful investor, attorney, or entrepreneur.
Fattening: Trust is built over weeks or months. The scammer introduces a fraudulent crypto platform showing fake profits and encourages progressively larger deposits.
Slaughter: Once sufficient funds are transferred, sometimes entire retirement accounts, the platform freezes withdrawals, the scammer vanishes, and the money is gone.
The Scale of the Problem: What Florida Victims Are Up Against
According to the FBI's 2024 Internet Crime Complaint Center Annual Report, investment fraud involving cryptocurrency cost American victims $5.8 billion in a single year, more than any other fraud category tracked by the FTC.
From 2023 to 2024, losses to pig butchering specifically increased 53 percent, with total U.S. crypto fraud losses reaching $9.3 billion across nearly 150,000 complaints. A University of Texas study traced more than $75 billion flowing from pig butchering scam victims to crypto exchanges between 2020 and early 2024.
Florida, with its large population of retirees, crypto investors, and Spanish-speaking communities, is among the most targeted states. Central Florida residents in Orange County, Seminole County, Volusia County, and Osceola County have all been victimized by these operations.
The Prince Group: The Largest Crypto Fraud Seizure in DOJ History
On October 14, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against Chen Zhi, also known as Vincent, chairman of Cambodia-based Prince Holding Group, charging him with wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering in connection with a near decade-long pig butchering operation.
The DOJ simultaneously filed a civil forfeiture action targeting approximately 12,271 Bitcoin worth approximately $15 billion, the largest forfeiture action in DOJ history.
The indictment alleged that Prince Group operated ten violent forced-labor compounds across Cambodia where human trafficking victims were coerced into executing scams around the clock, controlling over 76,000 social media accounts from a phone farm of 1,250 mobile devices.
In January 2026, Chen Zhi was arrested by Cambodian authorities and extradited to China. The DOJ forfeiture case remains active. Florida victims with properly documented losses may be eligible to participate in the forfeiture victim claim process.
