Understanding Romance Scams in Florida

Romance scams are not just a nuisance; they can have devastating effects on victims. These scams prey on emotions, often leading individuals to make financial decisions based on trust and affection.

Background: Suspected Romance Scam

A female client contacted Rambo Investigations, LLC after developing serious concerns that she may have been the victim of a romance scam. The subject claimed to be transparent and trustworthy. He provided what appeared to be verifiable personal details, including his real legal name, employment information, a residential address, and claims that he was a pastor affiliated with a local church.

Based on these representations, the client sent money for reasons that were later revealed to be false. Before pursuing legal action, the client needed confirmation of whether the subject was being truthful and whether his identity and location could be verified.

Findings: Deliberate Use of a Fictitious Address

Although the subject used his true name, the investigation revealed a clear pattern of intentional deception. The subject provided the client with an address that he represented as his residence. That address was, in fact, the leasing office of his apartment complex, paired with a fabricated apartment number.

The subject did not disclose that the address belonged to a leasing office. He also failed to clarify that it was a non-residential location. Investigators confirmed that the leasing office did not contain apartments. This demonstrated a deliberate attempt to create a fictitious residential address using information familiar to him in order to appear legitimate while concealing his true living situation.

This tactic is commonly used in romance scams. It helps avoid traceability, evade service of process, and delay civil accountability.

OSINT, Intelligence Databases, and Surveillance

Rambo Investigations conducted a comprehensive background investigation using:

  • Intelligence databases

  • Open-source intelligence (OSINT)

  • Behavioral and location analysis

  • Physical surveillance

Through these methods, investigators determined that the subject did, in fact, live within the same apartment complex but in a different residential building than the leasing office he falsely identified as his home.

Surveillance and verification efforts also confirmed that the subject was not affiliated with the church he claimed to pastor. He was not observed attending, working at, or participating in any activities at that church. No evidence supported his claimed religious role.

Undercover Operation and Verification of Residence

Because the subject actively avoided detection and did not maintain predictable routines, traditional surveillance alone was insufficient. Rambo Investigations implemented a lawful undercover operation designed to ethically and legally confirm the subject's actual residence.

When combined with OSINT and intelligence findings, this operation resulted in the positive identification of the subject's true residential building and unit. This corrected the false address previously provided to the client.

This step was critical. Accurate residence verification is often the single biggest obstacle in romance scam cases.

Outcome: Enabling Civil Legal Action

As a direct result of the investigation:

  • The subject's true residence was verified.

  • False statements regarding housing, employment, and religious affiliation were documented.

  • A verifiable address now exists for service of process.

  • The client has the opportunity to pursue civil legal action to attempt recovery of funds sent under false pretenses.

Private investigators do not recover money or determine liability. However, accurate, documented facts are often what make legal action possible. This investigation removed the primary barrier to accountability.

Why This Romance Scam Investigation Matters

Romance scammers often rely on partial truths, emotional trust, and familiar details to create credibility. Using a real apartment complex but falsely identifying a leasing office as a residence is a calculated tactic designed to mislead victims while remaining difficult to trace.

This case demonstrates the value of hiring a professional private investigator when dealing with:

  • Romance scams

  • Online dating fraud

  • False identities and addresses

  • OSINT-based investigations

  • Locating individuals for service of process

  • Civil fraud and misrepresentation cases

How to Protect Yourself from Romance Scams

Understanding the tactics used by scammers can help you avoid becoming a victim. Here are some tips:

  1. Verify Information: Always check the information provided by someone you met online. Use social media and search engines to confirm their identity.

  2. Be Wary of Requests for Money: If someone you've just met online asks for money, be cautious. Scammers often create elaborate stories to justify their requests.

  3. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, it probably is. Trust your gut feelings when interacting with someone new.

  4. Seek Professional Help: If you suspect a romance scam, consider hiring a private investigator. They can help uncover the truth and provide peace of mind.

Suspect a Romance Scam or Online Fraud?

If someone you met online or through social media has asked you for money while providing inconsistent, unverifiable, or misleading information about where they live, work, or who they are, a romance scam investigation can provide clarity before further harm occurs.
